When cleaning, most people treat all glass windows the same and this is a huge mistake. Many people would be surprised to discover that there are actually proper ways to clean different types of glass.

Tempered Glass

This kind of glass is often referred to as safety glass. If it were to break, it breaks into very small pieces that shouldn’t cause injury. It is actually pretty tough to clean and extremely easy to scratch. You will want to use a high-quality window cleaning product and a microfiber towel.

Low-E Glass

This type of glass is used for windows because it has a coating that prevents ultraviolet rays from shining through. If the sun’s rays were able to break through, it would increase the temperature inside of a person’s home. When cleaning these windows, do not use ammonia or use any kind of abrasive material. It is recommended to use a microfiber towel and a cleaner that does not contain ammonia.

Annealed Glass

This kind of glass is extremely common in windows. Annealed glass is usually pretty flat and is an absolute breeze to clean. Professional window cleaners are actually able to use a razor blade to clean it because it is difficult to scratch. However, if you are not a professional window cleaner this method is not recommended. The other method is using soap and water, a squeegee, and a microfiber towel. You could also you a glass cleaner of your choice.

Heat-Strengthened Glass

This kind of glass is extremely durable. They were created to withstand rapid temperature changes. However, they should never be touched with a razor blade. They should be cleaned in the exact same manner as annealed glass.
