Energy Efficient Windows Really Improve Energy Efficiency

Energy Efficient Windows

“New, energy efficient windows eventually pay for themselves through lower heating and cooling costs, and sometimes even lighting costs,” says to the United States Department of Energy (DOE).

Replacement windows can be a great way to improve the energy efficiency of your home.

“New, energy-efficient windows eventually pay for themselves through lower heating and cooling costs, and sometimes even lighting costs,” says to the United States Department of Energy (DOE).

According to Energy Star, Energy Efficient Windows can help reduce energy costs by as much as $446.00 per year on single-pane windows and $59.00 per year on double-pane windows. However, these figures can vary greatly depending on a number of factors:

  1. The condition of the previous window: single-pane, double-pane, age, etc. Obviously, replacing older windows will result in greater energy savings than replacing newer windows. Here in Maryland, homeowners can typically expect to save $263 per year by replacing single-pane windows and $93 by replacing double-pane windows.

  2. The energy efficiency of your home. Obviously windows are just a small part of the overall energy efficiency puzzle. If there are other glaring issues in your home affecting its efficiency, replacing your windows will not make a huge difference.

Energy Audit

An energy audit is a simple energy assessment of your home. It will give you a good understanding of where your home is losing energy and where you need to make improvements. In some instances, this will point to replacement windows. In other instances, it might make more sense to address insulation, roofing, or other sources of energy loss. Correcting these issues before you replace your windows will help ensure your new energy efficient windows really do improve your energy efficiency.
