New Windows in Fall, Energy Savings in Winter

new windows in fall energy savings in winter

If you want to save energy this winter you need to replace your windows this fall.

Whether we like it or not, winter is coming at us full speed. Sure it’s still technically summer, but fall only lasts a few short months before the blistering cold shows up. When the time comes to cozy up on the couch with a blanket and the heat running, you don’t want to sit and worry about all the warm air leaking out of your old windows.

Low-E Glass

We’ve gone over Low-E glass before, but it’s an important of energy efficient windows that bears repeating. Low-E stands for low emissivity glass, which is glass that has been coated with thin layers of metal glazing. This microscopic coating helps reflect sunlight instead of letting it in your home. This helps keep you house cool in the summer, but also helps keep heat in during the winter. Plus, since the ultraviolet rays can’t get in, they can’t fade furniture and carpets.

Gas Fills

Modern windows are made with more than one pane, but the space between isn’t left empty. The space between window panes are usually filled with either argon or krypton in order to improve the window’s U-factor. The U-factor is the amount of heat flow a product allows. A product with a low U-factor will be more efficient.

Air Leakage

It’s a good idea to consider the other components of your window besides just the glass. How the sash and sill seal will make a big difference in the amount of heat that leaks between the two parts. Good weather stripping will help make an efficient seal between these two parts, as well as keeping out the elements.
