Window Spotlight: All About Push-Out Windows

Push-out windows incorporate qualities of the classic crank-operated casement window with a few innovations that make them great for hard-to-reach spaces. Here are four things to know about push-out windows.

Casement windows, a common type of window which opens with a hinge, come in a wide variety of styles. One of these styles is the push-out window. Push-out windows incorporate many of the beloved qualities of the classic crank-operated casement window with a few innovations that make them great for hard-to-reach spaces. Here are four things to know about push-out windows.

1. What Are Push-Out Windows?

Push-out windows are casement windows that are pushed out by hand instead of operated with a crank. They consist of a sash (which is a pane of glass in a window frame) that is attached to your home with a hinge. A handle on the side allows homeowners to simply push the window open instead of adjusting its position with a crank on the bottom of the frame. Like many other windows, push-out windows have a variety of customizable options including the type of glass used, the finish on the hardware, the type of material used for the frame, and more.

2. Great for Hard-to-Reach Areas

When windows are over sinks, countertops, or other large fixtures or furniture, they can be extremely hard to open. Homeowners may struggle for purchase when trying to open a double-hung window over a tall dresser, for example. Push-out windows are ideal for such hard-to-reach areas because they simply require that the handle be turned and the window be pushed out.

3. Unobstructed Sight Lines

As with other casement windows, push-out windows provide an unobstructed view when fully open. This is extremely valuable for windows that face great views. French style push-out windows take things a step further by having two windows side by side, with two hinges on opposite sides. There is no pole or support in the middle, allowing the windows to swing open and provide a large and completely unobstructed view.

4. Customizable Features

Push-out windows can incorporate a myriad of innovations for improved function, aesthetic, and use. Some windows have friction hinges which allow the windows to be opened to any degree and held in place. This eliminates the possibility that the window will shut accidentally. Some push-out windows have retractable screens, premium finishes, or energy-efficient glass. Talk to your local window installation professional to see what features are available for your home.
